Día de los Difuntos
The Day of the Deceased celebrations of mainland Ecuador are similar to the Day of the Dead celebrations of other countries in North and South America. Families visit local cemeteries and share food near the graves of their ancestors. Traditional foods include guaguas de pan and colada morada. While the actual holiday falls on November 2, many communities also celebrate on November 1. Parks and plazas often fill up with pop-up fairs and carnivals. While it is possible for tourists to visit cemeteries on these days, please be polite when taking photos. This is a day of celebration for some and a day of mourning for others.
