Killa Raymi (September Equinox), Ecuadorian Sierra
The September Equinox celebrations are called Killa Raymi in the Ecuadorian Andes. Many of the other festivals taking place during this month have roots in this solar event. It is a traditional celebration of planting new corn and other crops. Look for festivals near Museos de Sitios (open-air archeology museums) like Ingapirca and Cochasqui as well as in towns with strong, indigenous traditions.
Small villages are likely to hold events on the weekend falling closest to September 21st.
